Spring into Action: Get Your Feelfree Kayak Ready for Fishing Season with a Ten Minute Tune-Up!
Spring is in the air, and that means one thing for kayak anglers: it's time to dust off our gear and get back on the water! After a long winter, your Feelfree kayak might need a little TLC to ensure it's in top shape for the upcoming fishing season. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you tune up your Feelfree and make sure you're ready to hit the water running.
1. Hull Inspection: Check for Cracks and Damage
Start with a thorough inspection of your kayak's hull. Flip it over and look for any signs of wear and tear. Any kayak will scratch and show signs of what has come to be referred to as 'river rash' over time. Your Feelfree Kayak has a thick hull that is designed to withstand normal wear and tear. Minor scratches are normal, but pay close attention to deeper gouges or cracks. If your Feelfree has a Wheel in the Keel, it should have fewer of these scratches than most other kayaks.
Tune-Up Tip: If you find deeper gouges, you can try softening the plastic with a heat gun or lighter to press the scratch closed. Do not overheat the hull. For cracks, contact your local dealer or Feelfree customer service for a repair kit. Inspect all bolts and tighten any that are loose, using blue LocTite to keep them in place.
2. Rudder System: Regrease Your Beaver Tail Rudder
Many people consider a rudder the first and best addition to your Feelfree Kayak. A Beaver Tail rudder will free up your hands for much more fishing while you are on the water. A well-functioning rudder is crucial for maneuverability. Check your Beaver Tail Rudder system for any issues.
Tune-Up Tip: Inspect the rudder cables for fraying and check the foot or hand controls for damage. If installed properly, the cables should never fray. The cable nuts on the rudder should easily spin to prevent putting undue stress on the cables. There should also be a little slack in each of the cables when the rudder is in the middle position. If you see any damage, contact your local dealer for guidance. Ensure the rudder moves freely and responds to your controls.

3. Pedal Drive System: Grease Your Overdrive
If your Feelfree kayak has an Overdrive pedal drive system, it's essential to maintain it for smooth operation. Each spring, you should regrease your Overdrive to make sure it operates properly for years to come.
Tune-Up Tip: Wipe down your Overdrive with a soapy cloth. Use an allan wrench to remove the prop and clean out any debris. Double-check that the shear pin is straight, and reattach the prop. Consult your owner's manual for lubrication points and apply one or two 8oz tubes of white lithium grease, spreading it evenly between all three application points. Turn the pedals a few times to distribute the grease throughout the drive.
4. Accessory Check: Don't Forget the Details
Electronics: If you have electronics mounted on your kayak, double-check that they are working correctly. Make sure that the mounts are all secure and any through hull screws are still water tight.
Storage: Ensure all your storage hatches and compartments are clean and dry and that any hinges are working properly.
Accessories: Check all your accessories, like seats, paddles, and fishing gear, for any damage or unusual wear.
5. Final Touches: Clean and Protect
Cleaning: Give your kayak a good wash with mild dish soap and water, especially if you've been in saltwater.
Protection: Apply a vinyl protectant spray, like 303, to keep your kayak looking fresh and protect it from UV damage.

By following these steps, you'll ensure your Feelfree kayak is in top condition and ready for an exciting spring fishing season. Happy paddling! We’ll see you on the water!
